Clubs 2.0 migration becomes a complete failure

Well, I’m going to be honest on this… I saw this coming.

Today, CSM (Clubs Social Media) decided to temporairly go over again to the old platform that Clubs has been using for years.

Now, I don’t know if you guys know Clubs, but it’s the oldest social network of the Netherlands, and it’s starting to show. It has grown old over the years, and not a lot of things have changed on it over the last years. The only change I can remember is actually adding a payment feature which was introduced years ago. And it’s still there.

But the platform used by Clubs is really dated. Believe me, I’ve used it alot. It’s packed with frames, most features don’t even work with Firefox, Opera or any alternative browsers. And even in Internet Explorer 7 and 8 it’s running with errors.
Also, Clubs has some very nice features webdesigners have abandoned for many years now.
One of those features is the ability to play a MIDI file on your own club. Ofcourse, it isn’t allowed to be big. So you’re being screwed with a 100 kb midi file which sucks, and repeats itself forever. I quickly put the “play sounds on Clubs” option on off.

And you also got some space to upload pictures and files… 20MB. Now, you can’t even upload PNG files, only BMP, JPEG and GIF. And I only use PNG.

But then again, Clubs 2.0 was there, and it was a lot better. A lot easier to costumize, a lot better to change things around it, and best of all: it was faster AND on Linux. Debian, to be correct. The current site is hosted (the old platform) on Windows servers. And well, yeah, the servers couldn’t really survive the tons of traffic, but they did their best.

But my conclusion is… never release something that’s not a finished product. I do it all of the time, and all the crap that comes with it sucks.

Couldn’t agree more, Cindy. It’s fucking slow… they should have used more AJAX… and I barely use Clubs anymore ever since it’s Clubs 2.0…
